My understanding of the problem is that you are given f(1) = 181 and f(n-1) - 17.
The second term would be f(2) = f(2-1) - 17
= f(1) - 17
= 181 - 17 = 164
The third term would be f(3) = f(2) - 17
= 164 - 17 = 147
So you are subtracting 17 from each previous term to get the next.
The 7th term would subtract 17 six times from the first term, 181.
f(7) = 181 - 6(17)
= 181 - 102 = 79

This is arithmetic sequence with a1 = f(1) = 181 and d = - 17. So f(7) = a7 = a1 + 6d = 181 - 102 = 79
