Hi, Aniyah!
Let's use F for the father's age. (You can use any letter you want.)
That means that Lindsey is 5 years less than 1/2 F. Five years less would be - 5 or 1/2 F - 5 for Lindsey.
The sum is what you get when you add their ages together.
So the father's age plus Lindsey's age equals 79.
F + 1/2 F - 5 = 79
To solve this, you first add the Fs 1F + 1/2 F is 3/2 F.
Now, you have 3/2 F - 5 = 79
Add 5 to both sides. 3/2 F = 84
Multiply both sides by 2/3 F = 56 This tells us the father's age is 56.
Lindsey's age is 1/2 F - 5 or 28 - 5 or 23.
To check our answers, we can add 23 + 56 = 79.
I hope this helps!
Best, Karen
