Solve for X SURD expression

Solve for X given that:

X = 2a/b = b/(a/2)

Mark M.

The equation is solve for X. Are there two equations? Check for accuracy.

Yes, X is equal to 2a/b and it is also equal to b/(a/2). It is a SURD equation.

Actually there are an unlimited number of solutions for a and b. If a / b = b / a any a = b solves. If a^2 = b^2 then any a = b solves. Therefor X = 1.

You are absolutely right with regards to any a=b pair solving for the 2a/b=2b/a equation! Once we move on to solve for x, however, we have two possible equations: x=2a/b or x=b/(a/2). For any a=b pair we choose, plugging in the two values will provide an answer of x=2. If we work with the second possible answer where a=−b, then plugging in any a=−b pair into either of these equations would result in an answer of x=−2 .

Agreed, yet the probelm states x = 2a/b = b /(a/2) and not x = 2a/b or x = b/(a/2). This verified by poster's responce to my comment/question.

That is right. But we should be careful using a=b=0. This is because I can rewrite the original equation 2a/b=2b/a as 2*a*a/b = 2b. Then if we evaluate a=b=0, we'll end up 0/0 = 0. Your answer is right except a=b=0.
