she just paid for 47+36 = $83 worth of groceries, or at most that much
if the overdraft fee consisted only of the amount she overdrew her account she bought $83 worth.
but
if there was also another overdraft charge, such as $10, then she bought $73 worth of groceries
if the overdraft charge was $35, then she purchased $48 worth of groceries. She pays the bank 48-47 =$1 plus the $35 overdraft charge.
she might have just bought $47.01 worth of groceries and got charged a $35 fee plus one cent.
all we know is she bought somewhere between $47,01 and $83 worth
Congress seems to be about to pass a bill limiting overdraft charges that banks can charge, due to situations similar to the above
