Numbers to the right are larger than numbers to the left. For example -1 > -5 because -1 is to the right of -5.

If you're struggling with this concept, the way I was taught was to imagine a lion. The lion always wants to eat the most food so we pretend that the < is the lions mouth. 6 gazelle is less than 3 gazelle so the lion wants to eat the 6. 6 gazelle > 3 gazelle.
When you have negative numbers, you can think of money. If you have -5 dollars, you owe five dollars. If you owe 20 dollars, you have -20 dollars so you have less money.
