An apple farmer has planted his trees om a square arrangement. If the arrangement was altered so that there were 5 more rows and 3 fewer columns, there would be 25 more trees.

Determine how many apple trees the farmer has planted.

Answer 1

x^2 +25 = (x+5)(x-3)= x^2 +2x -15

2x = 40

x=20

x^2 = 400 trees originally

25(17) = 425 trees, after adding 5 more rows and 3 less columns
