julio is paid 1.4 times his normal hourly rate for each hour he works over 30 hours in a week. last week he worked 35 hours and earned $436.60. write and solve an equation to find julio’s normal hourly rate, r. explain how you you know that your answer is reasonable.

Let r equal his hourly rate. Therefore 1.4r is his overtime rate.

30r+5(1.4r)=436.60

37r=436.60

r=$11.80

Check our work by doing 11.80x30. Which equals 354. Bonus rate is 11.80(1.4) which is 16.52 times the 5 hours. This is 82.60 which plus 354 equals 436.60.
