Water is being poured into a container at a constant rate. The data below represents the height of the water level with relation to time.
Time (s) -> Height of Water Level(cm) | |
0 | 0 |
1 | 1 |
2 | 1.5 |
3 | 1.8 |
4 | 2 |
5 | 3 |
6 | 5 |
7 | 7 |
8 | 8 |
9 | 8.6 |
10 | 8.8 |
11 | 8.9 |
12 | 9 |
- Graph the Height of the water level as a function of radius.
- Draw a secant on the graph corresponding to each time interval below. Then calculate the average rate of change.
- 1 s to 12 s
- 5 s to 7 s
- 11 s to 12 s
- Draw the shape of a possible container based on this data.

Check the comments for the graphing part.
Average rate of change is no problem. Take the difference in volume at the two times and divide by the difference in time.
For ii: Difference in volume is 7-3=4. Difference in time is 7-5=2. Average rate of change is 4/2=2.
