in the decimal system it's 4
in the number system with base 3, 2+2= 11
that's one 3 plus one 1 =4 converting to base 10
in the number system with base 4, 2+2= 10
in the number system with base 5 or more, 2+2 =4
they actually teach this stuff with common core to 5th graders, which drives parents up the wall. Our teaching profession looks for ways to confuse everyone.
in a number system with base 10, the digits go from 0 to 9,
with base 4, the digits go from 0 to only 3. 2+1 =3, but 2+2 =10 where the 1 digit means one 4 +0 digit for single units what's usually the 10's digit is now a 4's digit, indicating one 4, the single's digit =0, so 2+2 =4 converted to base 4 number system is 4+0 = 10.
another way to look at it is start with the binary system and convert from decimal to binary,
in binary there are only two digits, either 0 or 1:
1=1, 2=10, 3=11, 4=100, 2+2=4 = 100
base 3 system
1=1, 2=2, 3 =10, 4= 11 = 2+2
base 4 system
1=1, 2=2, 3=3, 4 =10 = 2+2
base 5
the same as decimal up to 4
2+2=4 for base 5 or more number systems
2+2 could equal 100, 11, 10 or 4 depending on the base of the number system
