A rectangular Garden measures 23' by 42'. Surrounding and bordering the garden is a path 3' wide. Find the area of this path.

The area of the path can be calculated by taking/calculating the entire rectangle including the path - just the garden.
(23+3+3)*(42+3+3) = Area of the whole garden + path = 1392
+3 twice for both the length and height as the path goes around the garden.
23 * 42 = Area of garden = 966
Therefore, the area of the path must be 1392-966 = 426 ft^2.
