x+8 = y^2
is the same as:
y^2 = x+8
or
x = y^2 -8
y = + or - square root of (x+8)
is not a function as there's two values of y for just one value of x
graph it, and i's a rightward opening parabola with vertex = (-8,0) where -8 is the smallest possible value of x
the vertical line test shows more then one y for any value of x (except at x=-8). The vertical line test proves it's not a function. It's a relation of y in terms of x, but not a function
