integers are the counting numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...., and also 0 and negative counting numbers, -1, -2, -3 -4, -5, -6, ....
integers are all real numbers, except fractions.
integers have no decimals. they have no digits to the right of the decimal pont
while numbers are counting numberss, plus zero.
rational numbers are all numbers that can be writtten in the form a/b whee both a and b are integers
irrational numbers are all numbers except rational numbers. irrational numbers cannot be written in the form a/b where a and b are integers
irrational numbers include square root of 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20, ..., the quare roots of whole numbers that are not perfect squares. Also numbers such as e e and pi. an irrational number cannot be written in decimal form that ends or repeats. pi=about 3.14159... but the digits never end or repeat
1/3 is rational. rational means RATIOnal, as in "ratio," a ratio of two integers.
irrational cannot be written as a ratio of two integers.
1/3 = 0.333.... where the 3's repeat endlessly.
3/1 = 3.000... where the 0's repeat endlessly
an irrational number cannot be written as a repeating decimal.
all whole numbers are integers, but all integers are not whole numbers
all integers are rational numbers but not all rational numbers are integers
whole numbers are a proper subset of the set of integers
integers are a proper subset of the set of rational numbers
if you drew a Venn diagram, the set of rational and the set of irrational numbers would divide the universal set of all real numbers. the set of rational and irrational numbers would be disjoint, non overlapping and mutually exclusive.
