Some differences between Chinese and English languages are surprising to Chinese ESL students because Chinese is a monosyllabic language and each character is clearly pronounced. This is unlike the flow of sounds in English words. Word order is also a big difference between the two languages. For instance, dates and addresses are written in a different order in each language. Also adjectives and adverbs are placed differently. Finally omission, or misuse of words, is often a surprise to foreign students learning ESL.
