What do author's need to do to be recognized by the publishing world?

Question

Most writers get multiple rejections before finally hearing "yes" from a publisher. They find themselves getting discouraged, and wondering if their work is the problem. They ask, what are these picky publishers looking for, anyway?

Answer 1

Today's publishers want to see more than your fantastic writing skills. Not only do they want a great story, riveting collection of poems or world-shaking nonfiction book - they also want to know that you come with a ready-made audience! How? Build your platform. Today's publishers want to see that you know how to navigate the world of social media. They want to see you active on sites like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. They want to see that people are already paying attention and following you. That makes it easier for them to sell your book to that audience. Think of the instapoet craze. Many poets would assert that these folks are not masters of the craft. That being said, they have sold thousands of copies! They have outsold many prize-winning poets. How? They built huge followings on Instagram. Like it or not, this is how the world works now. Let me help you craft messages that audiences will follow!

Answer 2

Most writers face rejection, and it is not always because their ideas are weak. The ideas are the talent part. What publishers are really looking for is execution.

Revision is essential. Strong writers refine their work multiple times, often using feedback to improve clarity, flow, and impact.

Stephen King received about 30 rejections for his first novel, Carrie, before it was finally accepted for publication.

At one point, he kept his rejection letters on a nail on the wall until the nail could not hold any more.

So when he was first published, he had already faced dozens of rejections. That is actually very typical in publishing. His breakthrough did not come from avoiding rejection, but from continuing to revise and keep submitting.

Rejection is a normal part of the process. The difference is continuing to improve and learning how to present your work at a professional level. With the right guidance and practice, these skills can be developed and strengthened over time.
