Q = 3N Q = no. quarters; N = no. nickels
qtr is $0.25; nickel is $0.05. If you don't like working with decimals, change to cents.
25Q + 5N = 160 Then substitute for Q
25(3N) + 5N = 160 -> 75N + 5N = 160 -> 80N = 160, so N = 2 nickels.
Then Q = 3N = 3(2) = 6 quarters.
Check: 2($0.05) + 6($0.25) = $0.10 + $1.50 = $1.60
