The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the tipping point of an already tense Europe. Due to the elements of M.A.I.N. (militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism) happening throughout Europe in the 1800s-early 1900s, the continent was a powder keg waiting to explode. The assassination of Ferdinand by the Black Hand, specifically, Gavrilo Princip, pushed the countries alliances into a war. Serbia was backed by the all strong and powerful Russia, and Austria-Hungary was hopeful that their military alliance with Germany would force them join the war and come to their aid. With more powerful nations being dragged into the war, it created a domino effect of nations jumping in to stake their claim on land in Africa and to show their stance as a world power.
