A rectangle is a shape with two equal lengths and two equal widths.
Because we know the Area of a rectangle is Length x Width and the Area of the rectangle is 42, we first have to consider all factors of 42. Once we find each multiplication expression, we can then use the formula for the Perimeter of a rectangle (sum of all four sides) to test out each factor.
First, we find all of factors of 42 (numbers divisible by 42).
1 x 42
2 x 21
3 x 14
6 x 7
Then, we find the perimeter by testing out each expression.
Perimeter: l + l + w + w
1 + 1 + 42 + 42 = 86
2 + 2 + 21 + 21 = 46
3 + 3 + 14 + 14 = 34
6 + 6 + 7 + 7 = 26
So the length of two sides of the rectangle is 6, and the width of two sides of the rectangle is 7.
