Is or Are? *Time sensitive poetry grammar*

On half the black boxes,

mic are closed; the other half are staring.

This is a poem about Zoom. Half of the black boxes on the screen are staring

But is it ‘are staring’ or ‘is staring’ ?

Is half singular in this context, which would necessitate changing it to ‘is’ instead of ‘are’ ?

Thanks

Hi, since box/boxes are countable then "are" is appropriate. Think: "Could I replace this with a number?" The poem could state: Eight of the black boxes on the screen are staring.

Sorry, the singular mic was a typo in the question. But back to ‘half,’ it would seem one half can technically be singular. That’s where I got confused.

Thanks. Yes, don’t worry, the singular mic was a typo in my question 😅

I believe Abigail is seeking a rule that directly speaks to the affect of "half" when used before a plural subject, Subject-verb agreement is trickier at times than we think. With fractions, the verb agrees with the whole: One-half of the boxes are gone. (“boxes” is a plural noun) One-fourth of the sand is white. (“sand” is a singular noun)
