First, if you are struggling in math and can not afford a tutor or are afraid to ask your mom for help, I highly recommend talking to your teacher and looking at some videos on Khan Acadamy (100% free) to help you grasp any topics you are struggling with in school. - at least at that point, you can show your mom that you tried to do the responsible thing.
Now, on to your question.
For this question, your teacher is asking you to compare their scores using the percent correct on an exam.
We are given the following information...
Austin = 92%
Liz = 47 of the 50 questions correct.
To answer this question we need to understand how to convert numbers from percents, decimals, and fractions.
Fractions
- Fraction to Decimal - divide the amount correct or amount you have by the total number possible
- Part/whole = Decimal
- ex. 47 out of 50 would be 47/50=0.94
- Fraction to Percent - Divide the Part by the Whole and then multiply by 100
- (Part/whole) = Decimal
- Decimalx100 = Percent
- ex. 47 out of 50 would be (47/50)100 = 94%
Decimals
- Decimal to Percent - Multiply your Decimal by 100 (move the decimal to the right 2 spaces)
- Decimal x 100 = Percent
- ex. 0.94 x 100 = 94%
- Decimal to Fraction - Multiply your decimal by 100 to get your percent (move the decimal to the right 2 places, then put your percent over 100.
- Decimal x 100 / 100= Fraction
- ex. 0.94 to a fraction. 0.94 x 100 = 94 then place over 100 would give 94/100 as a fraction
Percent
- Percent to Decimal - Divide your percent by 100 (simply move the decimal to the left 2 spaces)
- Percent/100 - Decimal
- ex. Turn 94% into a decimal 94/100= 0.94
- Percent to a Fraction - Put the Percent over 100 and drop the % sign.
- add 100 to the bottom of your percent and drop the % sign.
- ex. Turn 94% into a decimal would be 94/100
So again... we know that Austin got 92% and that Liz got 47 out of the 50 questions correct.
To solve this we would need to convert the "47 out of 50" to a percent.
To do this we will need to make "47 out of 50" into a fraction, divide to change the fraction to a decimal, then multiply by 100 to change the decimal into a percent.
- Set up a fraction Part/Whole = 47/50
- Solve for the Decimal 47/50 = 0.94
- Convert Decimal into Percent 0.94 x 100 = 94%
Now that we know that Liv got a score of 94% we can compare that to Austin's score of 92%
Since 94% is higher than 92% we can say that Liv scored higher than Austin on the exam.
Liv with a score of 94% would be the correct answer.
