To solve before simplifying:
plug in 2 for all the x values in the equation
-8x + 5 - 2x - 4 +5x
-8(2) + 5 - 2(2) - 4 + 5(2)
Following rules of operations, solve the multiplication terms first (the parentheses)
-8(2) + 5 - 2(2) - 4 + 5(2)
-16 + 5 - 4 - 4 + 10
then add or subtract the rest for the final answer!
-16 + 5 - 4 -4 +10 = -9
To solve after simplifying:
Combine like terms first
-8x + 5 - 2x - 4 + 5x
(-8x - 2x + 5x) + (5 - 4)
-5x + 1
plug in 2 for x and solve
-5x + 1
-5(2) + 1 = -9
Hope this helps :)
Hey!
To simplify you just need to plug in 2 for every x-value first! You will have:
-8(2) + 5 - 2(2) -4 + 5(2)
Simplify all the multiplication terms first (where the parentheses are) and then just work from left to right.
Hope this helps!
