The local amusement park is a popular field trip destination. This year the senior class at High
School A and the senior class at High School B both planned trips there. The senior class at High
School A rented and filled 11 vans and 12 buses with 412 students. High School B rented and
filled 9 vans and 2 buses with 126 students. Each van and each bus carried the same number of
students. Find the number of students in each van and in each bus.

Getting the foundation right
OK, so what's going on here? Two trips in vans and on buses. Figure out what? How many kids in each van and on each bus. Important details: each van holds the same amount of kids and is full, each bus holds the same amount of kids and is full. We need two variables to hold our answers. Let V be the number of students in any one van and B be the number of students on any one bus. Now write two math sentences based on the info in the problem.
11V + 12B = 412
9V + 2B = 126
Use elimination to cancel out the Bs and then solve for V. Plug the value for V into the first equation and
solve for B. Good luck!
