In mathematics, if you know the meanings of the words, like Sum, and Difference and other words, you understand why and how to do mathematics. Practicing steps is good, but knowing why and how to take the steps helps a student find their own way, and is quite powerful.

In other subjects students are tested on vocabulary in order to understand the lesson. So, why not learn the vocabulary in mathematics? I believe this is the key to unerstanding. We should not toil through a subject without gaining knowledge. "Getting a correct answer", through memorised steps is fleeting, but knowing Why And How to get the answer stays with the student much longer.
