I assume you meant to write "reported speech."
In reported speech, you need to pay attention to the tense in the direct speech since you need to transpose it into past tense, most of the time. You may also need to pay attention to pronouns, although here it is not necessary.
In the example, the teacher said: "mammals are warm blooded animals," the reported speech will be:
The teacher said that mammals were warm blooded animals.
The present tense in the direct speech becomes simple past tense. So remember to transpose/change the tense in the reported speech.
Below are three main patterns you can apply:
- If verb in direct speech is Simple Present -> it becomes Simple Past in reported speech.
- If verb in direct speech is Present Continuous -> it becomes Past Continuous in reported speech.
- If verb in direct speech is Present Perfect -> it becomes Past Perfect in reported speech.
