A construction crew has just finished building a road. The road is 9

 kilometers long. If the crew worked for 4 4/5

 days, how many kilometers of road did they build each day? (Assume they built the same amount each day.)

This one is getting at the idea of a rate … so we know how long the road was in total and how long they worked on putting it together. But what you’re trying to find is the rate that they were building at in terms of kilometers of road per day.

So you actually just want to divide and then simplify as much as possible

rate = distance in km / days

= 9 / (4 and 4/5)

= 9 / (24 / 5)

=(9 x 5) / 24

=45 / 24

=15 / 8

=1 7/8

What that means is that the crew built 1 7/8 kilometers of road each day :)
