put them all over a common denominator, then add their new numerators

= 21/24 + 16/24 + 12/24 = 49/24

or you can always try to convert everything to decimals and add them

7/8 = 0.875

2/3 = 0.66666...

1/2 = 0.5

2.0416666....

49/24 = 2.041666...

converting to decimals is equivalent to using 10 as the "common" denominator, although 24 is the LCD
