A few points to help you get started. The U.S. remained neutral during WWI from 1914 to 1917. During this time America still engaged in international trade with the participants in the war. This meant shipping, among other things, food and weapons to Allied nations. Due to violations of free trade, namely the German u-boats sinking trade ships, the U.S. declared war on the Central Powers in 1917. After that, the U.S. mobilized millions of soldiers into the military and by 1918 they were in Europe fighting the German army.
