laid/lay usage - correct?

Are these sentence all correct?


the plate was laid before the customer.


it was exciting when the plans were laid. 


they had more time to lay down the entrée you wanted. 


and there lay the daydreamer, wizened and cold.


and there lay derisory existence, disconsolate.

oh I got it now. By the way, the sentence "And there lay the daydreamer" is in the past tense. I thought perhaps it should be 'And there laid the daydreamer.' Someone else agreed. But 'and there lay' sounds right.

There doesn't seem to be any clue that the last two sentences should be past tense. They are correct if they are in the past. They are incorrect if the person writing the sentences intends for them to be in the present. If this is a test or exercise, it should be written in such a way that they student is clear on which the teacher is asking for.

Hi Julie B. This is the poem I've written: And there lay the daydreamer, wizened and cold, Painting Pollyanna in colours bright, bold With the sweat on his brow and ambrosian airs, He sat there for days. Oh, he stayed there for years. Until one balmily evening when the sun had just West fallen, The nerves in his chest began to press, crestfallen He'd lingered forever, an idealist so consummate, And there lay derisory existence, disconsolate.
