Tom has a 490-page book to read. If he has already read 56 pages, how many more pages should he read each week to finish in 6 weeks

If Tom has already read 56 pages of a 490-page book, then he has 434 pages left to read.  If we divide 434 pages by 6 for the six weeks he has to finish the book, then we find that he should read 73 pages per week to finish in six weeks.  (Technically, 72.3 pages, but we round up to ensure coverage of the whole book.)

If he has read 56 pages and there are a total of 490, then how many are left?  That's 490 - 56 = 434.

 

To read 434 pages in 6 weeks, he should read 434 / 6 pages each week.  That's 72 1/3 pages per week.
