Finding Length and Width of a rectangle when only given the area

You know that one of its sides is 70 meters longer than the width and that the area is 1,200 meters.

A = 1200

L= W+70

A=LW = (W+70)W = W^2 + 70W = 1200

W^2 + 70W = 1200

complete the square

W^2 + 70W + 1225 = 1225+1200

(W+35)^2 = 2425

W +35 = sqr2425 (ignore the negative square root)

W = about -35 + 49 = 14 meters

L= 84 meters

WL = almost 1200 m^2

Width is slightly more than 14 m

Length is slightly more than 84 m
