A preliminary answer to a research question is your best initial explanation based on what you know before completing the full research and analysis.
Think of it as a working hypothesis rather than the final conclusion. It gives your research direction and helps you determine what evidence you need to collect.
For example, if your research question is, “How does remote work affect employee productivity?” a preliminary answer might be, “Remote work may increase productivity when employees have clear goals, appropriate technology, and strong communication practices.”
You would then review research, collect or analyze data, compare alternative explanations, and determine whether the evidence supports or changes that preliminary answer.
A strong final answer should be evidence based. The preliminary answer simply gives you a logical starting point.
