A party rental company has chairs and tables for rent. The total cost to rent 3 chairs and 5 tables is $57. The total cost to rent 12 chairs and 2 tables is $39.

What is the cost to rent each chair and each table?

multiply 1st equation by 4, then subtract the 2nd equation from the result

12C + 20T = 228

12C + 2T = 39

18T = 189

T = 189/18 = $10.50 for one table

multiply 2nd equation by 5, and subtract 2 times the 1st equation

60C -10T = 195

6C +10T = 114

54C = 81

C = 81/54 = $1.50 per chair

12C + 2T = 39

12(1.50) + 2(10.50)= 18 + 21 = 39

3C + 5T = 57

3(1.5) + 5(10.5) = 4.5 +52.5 = 57
