Let c be the number of children tickets and a be the number of adult tickets sold.
c + a = 142 --> c = 142-a
5c + 8a = 890
Substituting for c
5(142-a) +8a = 890
710 -5a +8a = 890
3a = 890 -710 = 180
a = 180/3 = 60
c = 142-60 = 82
82 children tickets and 60 adult tickets were sold.
