Hello Aubrey,
With 12 boys and 10 girls in your gym class, the ratio of boys to girls is 12:10.
12 and 10 are both divisible by 2 so we can reduce 12:10 to 6:5
If 6 more boys joined the class, the ratio of boys to girls that are joining the class must be the same as the ratio of boys to girls already in the class, which is 6:5
So if 6 boys join the class, how many girls need to join so that the boys to girls ratio is 6:5? Five (5).
Let's check: if 6 boys join the class, how many boys will be in? 12 + 6 = 18
If 5 girls join the class, how many girls will be in? 10 + 5 = 15
The new ratio will be 18:15; 18 and 15 are both divisible by 3: 18/3 = 6 and 15/3 = 5
So 18:15 can be reduced to 6:5 which is the ratio we had at the beginning :)
Cheers.
