Two buses leave a station at the same time and travel in opposite directions. One bus travels 8kmh faster than the other. If the two buses are 976 kilometers apart after 4 hours, what is the rate of each bus?

(8+x +x)(4) = 976 where x = the speed of the slower bus, 8+x = speed of the faster

distance = speed times time

32 + 8x = 976

8x = 976 -32 = 944

x = 944/8 = 118 kmh for the slower bus

8+x = 126 kmh for the faster bus

in 4 hours slow bus goes 4(118) = 472 km

in 4 hours fast bus goes 4(126) = 524 km

472+524 = 976 km apart
