if j is 7 times 6 usually is half of a conditional sentence, with a 2nd clause saying "then ...."
as in
if P then Q where "then" is represented by an arrow pointing to the right
for example, if j=7 times 6 then 2j = 84, or
if j=7 x 6 then 2j = 2(7 x 6)
if you write the "then" as an arrow, the "if" is implicit.
this comes up in logic courses, in either math or philosophy courses
