Hi Brooke - first you must find the slope using the slope formula.
y₂ − y₁
−−−−−−
x₂ − x₁
-4 - (-6)
______ = 2/4 = 1/2
8 - 4
once you have your slope, you can plug it into the equation y = mx + b, while at the same time plugging in one of your points. This will give you your b value.
-4 = 1/2 (8) + b
Now solve for b, and you will be able to write your equation in y = mx + b form
