Since we don't know what the number is, we can use a variable to represent it. Let's use n.
"nine more than twice the number" means "the number plus 9" which is n+9
"the same as" means "equals"
"one less than" means minus 1 and "twice the number" is two times the number, so "one less than twice the number" means "two times the number, minus 1" which is 2n-1
Putting this all together:
n + 9 = 2n - 1
Now we can solve the equation. Start by adding 1 to both sides:
n + 9 + 1 = 2n - 1 + 1
n + 10 = 2n
Now subtract n from both sides:
n + 10 - n = 2n - n
10 = n
The number is 10.
Check your work:
Nine more than 10 is 19
Twice 10 is 20, and one less than that is 19
