You have two cupcakes and 3 students. How do you divide the cupcakes so each student gets an equal share?
give each 1/2 a cupcake. That leaves 1/2 cupcake not yet divided.
3 x 1/2 = 3/2 = 1 1/2 cupcakes with 1/2 left.
How do you divide that remaining 1/2 cupcake among three students?
each gets 1/3 of 1/2 = 1/3 x 1/2 = 1/(3x2) = 1/6
Now each student has 1/2 + 1/6 = 3/6 + 1/6 = 4/6 = 2/3
or more simply just divide 2 cupcakes by 3 students, and each gets 2/3 of a cupcake
divide the total number of cupcakes by the total number of students to get the equal share for each
