Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) and Testing: Quick Overview
What is PEth?
- A molecule formed only when you consume alcohol.
- Made inside your red blood cells by combining phosphatidylcholine and ethanol.
Why is PEth tested?
- It shows alcohol consumption over the past 2–4 weeks.
- Highly specific and sensitive marker for drinking.
Can you mask or chemically alter PEth?
- No. PEth forms inside cells and can’t be broken down or hidden by taking anything.
- No known safe supplements or chemicals can clear or change it quickly.
Best way to pass a PEth test:
- Stop drinking alcohol well before the test.
- Let your body naturally clear the PEth over time.
