The crew on a fishing boat caught four fish that weighed a total of 1,080 pounds. The tarpon weighed twice as much as the amberjack and the white marlin weighed twice as much as the tarpon. The weight of the tuna was 5 times the weight of the amberjack.

 

How much did each fish weigh?

t+a+w = 1080

t= 2a, a =t/2

w = 2t

t+ t/2 + 2t = 1080

3t/2 = 1080

t = (2/3)1080 = 2(360) = 720 lbs for the tuna

w = 1440 lbs for the white marlin

a = 360 lbs for the amberjack
