the sum of two numbers is seventeen. Twice the smaller number is one more than the larger number.
x=smaller number y=larger number
x+y=17
2x=y+1
Now you have a system of equations. To solve this system, I would use the elimination method. To do this, I would re-write the 2nd equation to match the form of the first equation. In other words, I would move the "y" in the 2nd equation to the left side.
The 2nd equation would then be 2x-y=1
So the new system of equations would be:
x+y=17
2x-y=1
To solve by elimination, add the two equations together, then once you solve for x, put that answer into one of the original equations to solve for y.
