Since the phone company charges 10 cents per minute, if your call lasts 2 minutes, how much do you pay? 20 cents, right? How about if your phone call lasts 3 minutes, how much do you pay? 30 cents, right?
So, you take the 10 cents and multiply it by the number of minutes to get the cost, right? Well "x" is the number of minutes. So your cost (in cents) is 10x. Does that make sense to you?
It might be better to have the cost be in dollars instead of cents so the cost = 0.10x
If "y" is the cost, then we have y = 0.10x
To graph it, the x-axis would be the time (in minutes) and the y-axis would be the cost (in dollars). The slope of the line would be 0.10 or 1/10 meaning it goes up 1 for every 10 units right:
