if this is a circular cake then volume = height times pi(r^2) where r= radius of the cake
8 3/4 = 35/4 = hpi(r^2) where h= height of 3 layers
h = pi(r^2)(4/35 = 4pi(r^2)/35
h/3= height of one layer = 4pi(r^2)/105
if this is a cubic cake with height =diameter
then
volume = h^3 = d^3 = 35/4 = the height of 3 layers cubed
h = cubic root of 35/4
h/3 = 1/3 of the cube root of 35/4 = about 0.687 feet = height of one layer = about 8 1/4 inches
