The scarcity of resources has been a major causal factor in human history. It has led to endemic warfare, as nations compete for land and other resources. It has led to an increase in the gap between the wealthy nations and the poorer ones, as well as a similar gap between individuals. It has led to the growth of empires, and globalization, as well as to the exploitation of human labor. It has also led to many incidents of ethnic cleansing/genocide, as evidenced by the rise of National Socialism under Hitler's belief that Germany needed leibensraum, meaning room to live. These have all been within the realm of human experience since the founding of civilization, allegedly by the Sumerians 5000 years ago.
