You can plug in each value to evaluate - it indeed is option a.
However, inspect the pair visually - and you'll realize that options b and c won't likely fit the solution - both are positive values and therefore will likely be greater than 12
Same goes for option d.
In a timed test, it will help to do a quick visual analysis and the plug in the most likely value - you save time that way.
