Let's use the variable , x to represent one of the two numbers. Then the second number will be represented by: (x + 2)
Next we can show the difference (subtraction) of their two squares as:
(x + 2)2- x 2 =44
Recall that (x + 2)2 is equivalent to x2 + 4x + 4.
Now solve for x :
(x + 2)2 - x2 =44
(x2 + 4x + 4) - x2 = 44
4x + 4 = 44
4x = 40
x = 10
One number is 10
The other will be :
x+ 2 = 10 + 2 = 12
The other number will be 12
