to be a function there cannot be more than one y value for any given x value
lyl + x = 1
has points (0,1) and (0,-1) on its graph
that's two y values, 1 and -1 for just one x value, 0.
It fails the vertical line test. Graph the equation. If a vertical line intersects the graph more than once, it's not a function.
