Kadeem wants to buy kiwi and strawberries to make a fruit tart. Kiwi cost $4.50 per pound and strawberries cost $2.50 per pound. How much does he spend if he buys 0.5 pounds of kiwi and 3 pounds of strawberries? How much does he spend if he buys x pounds of kiwi and y pounds of strawberries 

1. Total cost, 0.5 pounds of kiwi and 3 pounds of strawberries
2. Total cost, x pounds of kiwi and y pounds of strawberries

Cost = 4.5(.5) + 2.5(3) = 2.25 + 7.5 = $9.75 total cost

Cost = 4.5x + 2.5y where x = pounds of kiwi and y= pounds of strawberries
