Geography has a lot to do with the development of nations. It affects everything from economy to transportation and infrastructure to industry and culture. For example, a country with wide navigable rivers and/or a coastline allows the country to use those waterways for transportation of goods and to build harbors for international shipping and the import/export of goods. If the country has minerals or petroleum, that's going to have big effects on the economy, from both the extraction and production of the minerals and oil and from the jobs required to do so.
There's a lot more to be said, obviously, but I hope that helps!
