Two angles are complementary if they add up to 90 degrees.
The two angles are (7x + 40) and (3x + 20).
So, (7x + 40) + (3x + 20) = 90 degrees;
7x + 40 + 3x + 20 = 90;
Add like terms: 7x + 3x + 40 + 20 = 90;
10x + 60 = 90; Move 60 to the right side of the equation: 10x = 90-60;
10x = 30; Divide both sides by 10 to get x by itself: x = 30/10; x = 3;
Substitute 3 in original equations given for each angle:
7(3) + 40 = 21 + 40 = 61 degrees AND 3(3) + 20 = 29 degrees;
So, the larger angle equals 61 degrees.
